HANGZHOU INSTALLATION: CIRCLE AND SQUARE
Site: Hangzhou, China
Client: Hangzhou Chengbei the Mixc
Art Consultant: Vantaly
Program: Temporary installation
Completion Date: 2023
Featured In: designboom
Installed at a newly constructed mix-use development in Hangzhou, China, Behin Ha's Circle and Square was commissioned for the opening of the development complex and will remain up through June of 2024. The project is an adaptation of Behin Ha's previous temporary installations Coshocton Ray Trace (Coschocton, Ohio, USA - 2019) and Together Apart (Middelfart and Billund, Denmark - 2020) to a new site.
The temporary installation consists of 426 coated mesh fabric ribbons stretched between the building roofline and the ground. Connected to the ground along a pair of circular anchor arrays, the arrangement of ribbons creates two outdoor spaces. The interplay between the linear top anchor positions and curved ground anchor pattern gives rise to differentiated and complex conditions of visual overlap, density, and transparency. The bright orange color of the installations create a focal point and invites curious passers-by to interact with the work.
